A Short N Sweet Kind of Day

July 25, 2010

short n sweet bakery menu I first heard about Hilo’s Short N Sweet bakery (where O’Keefe’s used to be on Kinoole Street) from a Twitter friend who posted a photo of one of their beautiful cakes.

A few weeks later, Short N Sweet catered our Hawaii Island Board of Realtors trade show and the food was so good that I made a note to get by to check it out as soon as possible.

Today was the day!

Short N Sweet Sunday Brunch

If I had known about the Sunday brunch ahead of time, I would have insisted that we go to eat there instead of making the quick drive into town for “to-go” food. As it turns out, Maria and Dien Short started the Sunday brunch just a few weeks ago. Their Facebook page status update from this morning tells me everything I wish I had known earlier:

It’s Sunday and that means brunch at Short n Sweet! Quiche of the day: Asparagus and Swiss cheese… Eggs Benedict, cinnamon apple brioche French toast, fresh tropical fruit compote, toasty grilled paninis, fresh organic salads….. and don’t forget the live music!

I foresee a Hilo Short N Sweet Sunday Brunch in my near future, but, for today, we “settled” for Barbecued Pork sandwiches on wheat focaccia bread, panini style. (No disappointment here–this Southern girl is always up for a good BBQ pork sandwich.)

Short N Sweet on Yelp

short n sweet bakery music While I was waiting for our order, I had a few minutes to listen to the music and talk with Maria Short and one of her relatives from San Francisco. I mentioned that I would be posting a few photos here on the blog and we ended up discussing Yelp vs TripAdvisor for reviews.

For those of you who can, stop in and give them a review on their Yelp page.

As local residents, we have the advantage of the “coconut wireless” but Big Island visitors are also looking for good information about the best places to spend their time and money. Review sites are an easy way to support our favorite restaurants and businesses–especially those who support local agriculture!

Short N Sweet moved to Hilo from Hawi - the paintings may look familiar!
