Best of SF: Philz Coffee and a Mission Mini

October 4, 2010

Making my cup of Tesora at Philz Coffee

When a Big Island girl goes traveling, what is she to write about on a Big Island-centric blog?

I thought it over and decided that, since Kona coffee–a uniquely “Hawaii” experience–is often the topic of attention for Big Island travel writers, I would turn the tables a bit and learn a little about where San Franciscans go for a caffeine fix. I didn’t expect it to be so….easy.

Philz Coffee on 18th St/Castro

Voted SF Weekly’s 2010 Best Coffee, one Philz Coffee location is less than two blocks from the house where we are staying this weekend. Philz is known for making your coffee one cup at a time–and strong, as I learned later when I read on their website that the amount of beans they put into each cup is “equivalent to 3 cups of your normal coffee!”

This morning, I tried the signature house blend, Tesora, or “treasure” blend.

This blend is the godfather of all blends, truly the real deal. Seven years in the making and our first blend to ever be created, the Tesora is a treasure that consists of the most valuable and complex jewels of coffee….If it is your first time visiting Phil’z coffee, we highly recommend you order our Tesora blend. Tesora, a grand representation of our coffee and the way coffee should taste!

Pumpkin Spice Mission Mini

It seems Mission Mini cupcakes are everywhere…including on the counter at Philz.

Normally, I try to wait until November 1st to give in to the pumpkin spice pressure (December 1st for eggnog!). But, since this is a vacation, the Mission Mini won me over. Watch the YouTube video and tell me if you could have resisted!

Soon to Return to Kona Coffee

We’ll be back in Hawaii tomorrow. And back to my regular Kona coffee at Waimea Coffee Company. In the meantime, “mahalo” to Philz for adding a little something extra to our stay near the Bay!

I’ll have a triple at Philz! Sounds great – glad you’re enjoying the trip. And… cupcakes are everywhere now… we ran into fantastic cupcake joints in LA and Seattle this summer too. It’s the thing – safer than a whole cake, big enough for a fix!
